HAZEL LORENE PEER


HARTFORD CITY
Hazel Lorene Peer, 80, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015 in Bridgewater Centre, Hartford City.

She was born in Hartford City September 2, 1934 to Leonidos and Eva (Pommell) Leffingwell. Hazel attended Lincoln Township Schools. She first married Robert Doublin in 1950 and they raised six children. She later married Eldo Peer on February 28, 1988 and he passed away August 16, 1991. Richard  Shimkus, long-time friend and companion of 17 years, died in 2013.
Hazel worked at RCA/Thompson Electronics, Marion, for 44 years retiring in 1994.  

Surviving are: four daughters, Patricia (Martin) Cunningham, Lake Elmo, Minnesota, Vera (Tom) Whitted, Claypool, Indiana,  Viola (D.J.) Driscoll, Minnesota, and Mary (Kenneth) Murphy, Montpelier; two sons, Robert Nathaniel (Kristi) Doublin, Jr., Minnesota, and Dickie Joe (Kimberly) Doublin, Minnesota; three step-children, Jim (Kathy) Peer, Junior Peer, and Linda Sue Brown, all of Marion.  Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Milli Masters and four brothers, Richard Leffingwell (who died in Normandy during WW II), Chalmer, Theodore and Frank Leffingwell.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 29 in Blackford Baptist Temple, 2252 N. State Road 3, Hartford City with Pastor Larry Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Muncie.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, January 28 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

NAEDEAN J. COOK


Naedean J. Cook, 80, of Hartford City, IN, passed away at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion, IN, on January 19, 2015.
Mrs. Cook was a member of Fairview United Brethren Church in Hartford City, IN, and served as an organist there for several years.  She volunteered as an EMT in the mid to late 1980s at Blackford County Hospital.

She is survived by her children Gaylene (Larry) Holloway of Bradenton, FL; Nanene (Bob) Randolph of Owensboro, KY; and Randy (Peggy) Cook of Batavia, NY.  Also surviving are her granddaughter, Angie (Dave) Thiery and two great- grandsons, Craig and Blake Thiery all of Hartford City;  sisters Melanie of Las Vegas, NV; Tina (Bruce) Murrell, Hartford City; brothers Nick Berrier of Hartford City; Michael (Becky) Warner of Matthews, IN.
Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Harold Gene, who passed away September 7, 2004.  She was the daughter of Clifford Berrier and Thelma Warner who are also deceased.

A private service will be held at the Waters Funeral Home in Hartford City, with burial following the service in Hartford City Cemetery.

ROBERT E. ELWOOD


HARTFORD CITY, IN
Robert E. Elwood, 89, passed away Friday, January 9, 2015 in IU Health Blackford Hospital.

He was born June 14, 1925 in Hartford City, the son of Raymond and Katherine (Risinger) Elwood. Bob attended Hartford City Schools and was a US Navy veteran of WWII. He married Mary Kerlin on November 24, 1946 in Hartford City.
He was employed at Warner Gear in Muncie for 36 years, retiring in 1980.

Bob was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Christian Home Builders Sunday School Class, AARP, Amvets Post #23, American Legion Post #159, and Blackford Lodge #106 F&AM. He also served his community as a Hartford City volunteer fireman for 20 years and as a Hartford City policeman. Bob was a sports fan, particularly for the Chicago Cubs, Indiana Pacers, and Indianapolis Colts.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; a daughter, Diana (Steven) Seelig; son, Ross (Cheryl) Elwood, both of Hartford City; a sister, Dora (Ralph) Holsinger, rural Gaston; 3 grandchildren, Brian Seelig, Kari Johnson, and Kerbi Elwood; 3 great-grandchildren, Brayden, Shaylen, and Kaymen Johnson, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Odus and Dean Elwood, and sisters, Evelyn Williams, Irene Hopkins, and Edna Pierson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 with Rev. Lloyd Hall officiating. Burial will be made in Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City. Masonic services will be at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Helen Borgenheimer and nursing staff and employees at Blackford Hospital for their compassionate care.

Robert Lee Bales

Hartford City

 Robert “Bob” Bales, 77, of Hartford City, passed away January 6, 2015.

Bob was born April 12, 1937 in Montpelier to William “Dewey” and Wilma Bales.  He graduated from Montpelier High School and married his wife of 53 years, Nancy Jane Bales, in 1961 in Speedway.

After a stint in the U.S. Army, Bob returned to Hartford City and the Overhead Door Company where he eventually became Plant Manager. He went to Hartford Packing Company as Plant Manager and finished his career with Burkhart Carolina. He then retired and lived his dream of living on a golf course with his wife Nancy.

Bob was a member of the Blackford Golf Club for 37 years, serving on the Board of Directors for 21 years.  He served on the Board of Directors for the Golf Trustees and was president for seven years.  He was also a Mason.

Dedicated to his community, Bob was a 50-year member of the Hartford City Presbyterian Church, serving four terms as an Elder.  He was a Kiwanian for 47 years and President in 1979. Bob served 12 years on the Blackford County School Board and 21 years on the Blackford Industrial Development Board.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Wilma Bales and his brother Glenn Bales.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bales, daughters Pam Bales and Kelly (Bales) Sharp, son-in-law Tom Sharp, Grandsons Joshua Thomas Sharp, Patrick Rawson Bales-Parks, Jordan Robert Sharp, Ted Dewey Bales Parks and Joel Dillon Sharp.  He is also survived by his brother William Carl Bales (wife Sue), sister Sharon Bales and sister-in-law Vallis Bales.

Visitation will be held at Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, IN 47348 on Friday January 9, 2015 from 2 – 7 p.m.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 10:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Hartford City, 117 W. Franklin St., Hartford City.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church and/or the Blackford Community Foundation (Bob Bales Scholarship) via envelopes at Waters Funeral Home.
