Hartford City
Evelyn G. Burch, 98, passed away March 31, 2016 at
her residence.
The last surviving child of ten children, she was
born in Winslow, Indiana on January 28, 1918 to Rev. George Gilbert Burch and
Mary Lois (Willis) Burch. She graduated from Mount Olympus High School, Mount
Olympus, Indiana and received a B.A. in 1941and a M.A. in 1942 from Indiana University.
Evelyn worked as a translator for the Department of
Defense from 1943 to 1970, retiring in 1970. She spoke and translated seven different
languages. She also enjoyed reading, genealogy, theology and traveled extensively
with Smithsonian tours.
Evelyn was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church, Hartford City and had been a member of New York Avenue Presbyterian
Church, Washington, D.C. for fifty-three years before moving to Hartford City in
2006. She was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha.
Surviving are seventeen nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3,
2016 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St. Hartford City with Pastor
Susan Finley presiding.
Friends may call on Sunday from 1 – 3 p.m. in the funeral
home.
Burial will be made at 3 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2016
in Sunset Cemetery, Winslow, Indiana.
