LEO A. NOTTINGHAM

HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA

Leo A. Nottingham, 97, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor.

A life resident of Grant and Blackford Counties, he was born in Matthews on October 11, 1914 to Ray and Mary Pauline (Lambert) Nottingham and graduated from Matthews High School in 1933. On December 14, 1935 he married Esther Mittank. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1986.

Leo served in the Navy during W.W. II aboard Light Carrier CVL-28, U.S.S Cabot.  After his discharge, he was a self-employed carpenter and construction worker and had also farmed.

Mr. Nottingham was a member of the Hartford City School Board for several years and was president of the school board when Blackford County Schools were consolidated. He was also a member of Indiana Farm Bureau and Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Dale (Gayle) Nottingham, Hartford City and Don (Margery) Nottingham, Fort Wayne, a daughter, Anita (Alan) Shupe, Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother, John.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, 2012 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Pastor Dan Coffman officiating. Burial will follow in Matthews Cemetery.

Friends may call at Waters Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The family requests memorials be made to the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

KATHLEEN RHODES

HARTFORD CITY, IN

Kathleen Rhodes, 91, former Marion resident, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012 in Bridgewater Centre, Hartford City.

She was born June 20, 1921 in Marion, the daughter of Frank and Ica Bell (Pulley) Speaight. She married Ernest J. Rhodes on February 2, 1946. He preceded her in death.

Kathleen was retired from Foster Forbes, Marion and had resided in Hartford City for the past 20 years.

Surviving are her children: Phyllis (David) Willmann, Ernest (Dianne) Rhodes, both of Hartford City, and Carl (Janice) Rhodes, Marion; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two sisters, Delores Wiekel and Charlotte Pulley.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2012 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Rev. Lloyd Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Grant Memorial Park, Marion.

Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 1 and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

MAX R. SNYDER

HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA

   Max Richard Snyder, 77, passed away Thursday morning, September 27, 2012 in IU Health Blackford Hospital.

    A native and life resident of Hartford City, he was one of five children born Nov. 11, 1934 to Charles Russell and Thelma M. (Pentecost) Snyder, Sr. and was a Lance Corporal upon his discharge from serving in the United States Marine Corps.

  Max retired from Box USA (formerly St. Joe Container) Hartford City in 1997 after forty-two years of service and gave twenty-two and a half years of service to the Hartford City Volunteer Fire Department.

   He attended the Bethel Center Church of the Brethren, was a member of the Montpelier Lodge #600 F & A.M., the Mizpah Shrine, American Legion Post #159 and the Indiana Volunteer Fireman’s Association.

   Max is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Sharon (Markin) Snyder; two sons Richard Wayne (wife, Shannon) of Indianapolis and Montpelier Police Chief, Chris Snyder; six grandchildren, Rachael, Ryan, Jessica, Bailey, Shaylah and Levi; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

   In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Charles R. Snyder, Jr., Donald E. Snyder and Jerry Snyder, as well as his sister, Judith “Judy” Snyder.

   Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 1 in the Bethel Center Church of the Brethren, State Road #26 and Co. Rd. 175 W, with Pastor Ellen Adney presiding.  Burial will be in the Hartford City Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Dunkirk American Legion.

   Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 30 from 2 – 8 p.m. in Waters Funeral Home 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, and from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday, at the church.

   Montpelier Lodge #600 will conduct a memorial service at 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to Montpelier Lodge #600 Craft Club, for parking lot paving/maintenance or to the Shriner’s Hospital Transport Fund.

JOSEPH LAWRENCE MCATEE

HARTFORD CITY, IN          

Joseph Lawrence McAtee, 95, prominent Hartford City businessman, passed away September 1, 2012 in Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

He was born October 1, 1916 in Hartford City, the son of Henry and Estella (Bloxsom) McAtee. A 1934 graduate of Hartford City High School, he married Marjorie Elizabeth Johnston on February 14, 1951 in Hartford City. Her death occurred November 26, 1999.

Joe was a WW II Navy veteran, serving in a P.T. squadron with the late John F. Kennedy. JFK went on to command P.T. 109.

Mr. McAtee started his business in the early 1950’s at the Gas & Shop located next to the old Wagon Wheel Motel, later moving to Joe’s Gas & Shop which became Joe’s Foods. Joe’s Foods had two locations in Hartford City, one in Montpelier, and one in Portland. After retiring, Joe built a woodworking shop, producing fine furniture.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Oswego, Indiana. He was also a member of Blackford Lodge #106 F & AM, Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine, Elks, Amvets, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and former board member of Blackford Country Club, former board member of Pacesetter Bank, and was a former Blackford County Councilman.

Joe loved to read and keep up on current events, enjoyed golfing, fishing and relaxing at Lake Tippecanoe.

Surviving are two sons; Pat (Brenda) McAtee, Hartford City and Kerry (Beth) McAtee, Fort Wayne; four grandchildren, Rachael, Jesse, Clay and Anna; six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Lauren, Keira, Mackenzie, Gabriel and Jaiden and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters, Forrest, Morris, Jim, Pete, Catherine, Christine and Marilyn.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 4 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Pastor Gary Colby officiating. Burial will follow in Twin Hills Cemetery, Pennville, with military graveside rites.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-6 p.m. Monday, September 3 and after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

KATHRYN ANNE ROSE WRESTLER

MONTPELIER, INDIANA

Kathryn Anne Rose Wrestler, 90, passed away Monday, August 27, 2012 at her sister’s residence in Hartford City.

Kathryn was born December 29, 1921 in Blackford County to Omer and Mary Jane (Taughinbaugh) Risinger. She graduated from Hartford City High School in 1939 and worked at Franklin Finance for several years. On November 11, 1950, she married John C. Wrestler in Montpelier and they resided in rural Wells County.

Kathryn was a member of First Baptist Church, Montpelier, and was a lifetime member of Five Points School.

Surviving are her husband, John; her son, Charles (Jan) Wrestler, rural Montpelier; 2 daughters, Anne (Gary) Boone, Keystone and Linda Wrestler, (husband, Ron Wielage), Indianapolis; her sister, Virginia Risinger, Hartford City; 5 grandchildren, David (Bonnie) Boone, Keith Boone, Carol (John) Felger, Jennifer Wrestler and Jeremiah Wrestler; 8 great-grandchildren, Aislinn, Ian, Loki and Colton Boone, Caity and Emme Patton, Zack and Kylee Felger.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her infant daughter, Nancy Rose, 3 brothers, Joseph, Robert and Edward Risinger, and her sister, Martha Risinger.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 31 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Pastor Robert Allen and Pastor Frank Rodgers officiating. Burial will follow in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Montpelier.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 30 and after 10:00 a.m. Friday.

LADONNA RUVANG

HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA

LaDonna L. Ruvang, 85, passed away August 15, 2012 at her residence.

She was born June 27, 1927 in New Castle to George and Myrtle (Lorentz) Holloway. LaDonna married Ralph G. Ruvang on December 17, 1950 in New Castle and they moved to Hartford City in 1958.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Elks #625, the former Blackford Country Club, several bowling leagues, bridge clubs and euchre clubs.

LaDonna was co-owner and operator of the Montgomery Ward Appliance and Catalog Store on the west side of the square retiring in 1983. She also worked several secretarial jobs through the years.

Surviving are: 2 daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” (Michael) Glass and Diane (Peter) Brown, both of Hartford City; a son, John (Lynn) Ruvang, Bartonville, Texas; 6 grandchildren, Jason and Jeremy Glass, Aaron Brown, Tillery, Stephanie and Brandi Ruvang; and 2 great-grandchildren, Derek and Brayden Glass, one sister, Sharon Hager, Muncie, and 3 nieces, Lucinda Bowen, Christina Arnett and Kelli Drake.

In addition to her parents, her husband Ralph preceded her in death on October 25, 2007.

A Celebration of LaDonna’s life will be held in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, August 19 with Rev. Lloyd Hall officiating.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 19 from noon – 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

TOMMY R. KNIGHT

HARTFORD CITY, IN

Tommy R. Knight, 65, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at his residence.

He was born May 30, 1947 in Decatur, Indiana, the son of Thomas A. Knight, Jr. and Elda L. (McKibben) Knight. Tommy graduated from Hartford City High School in 1965. He married Ruby Roberts on September 10, 1983 in Hartford City.

Tommy was a veteran of the U. S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict.

He had been a salesman for National Life Insurance Company (now American General). He retired in 2009 from Manor Care Nursing Home, Anderson, where he worked as a janitor.

Tommy was a member of Amvets Post 23, Hartford City.

Survivors include: his wife, Ruby; four children, T.R. (Angie) Knight, Upland, Barbie Coronato (companion, Kenny Reynolds), Alicia (Justin) Golden and Christopher Knight (companion, Jessica Hayworth), all of Hartford City; two sisters, Dixie (Jerry) Summerlot and Nancy (Monte) Hedden, both of Hartford City; five grandchildren, twins, Emily and Rachel Knight, Toby and Bryce Street, and Matthew Knight.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas A. Knight, Jr. and mother, Elda L. Roberts.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 30 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Pastor Chris Neel officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 – 4 p.m. Sunday, July 29.
