Tucker John Farmer

MARION, IN

Tucker John “T.J.” Farmer, age 2, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2013 in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

T.J. was born on February 18, 2011 in Marion, the son of John D. Farmer and Ashley N. (Lewis) Sickler and was “Tucky Toes” to his brothers, Carter Sickler, Allen Farmer and Dallas Farmer.

Mom and Dad couldn’t get T.J. to watch much television, as he loved anything to do with being outdoors – boating, swimming, running, fishing and especially walking.

T.J. attended Eastview Wesleyan Church, Gas City and loved to sing and dance.

In addition to his parents and brothers, he leaves behind grandparents: Tim Cook, Marion, Tina (“Grammy” to T.J.) Myers (Bil), Huntington, and Dave & Sue Farmer, Gas  City; great-grandparents, Peggy J. (“Grandma” to T.J.) Cook, Marion, Rosalie Maddox, Marion, Marjie and Flay Lhamon, Gas City and Jaybo (“Pape” to T.J.) & Sandy (“GG” to T.J.) Lewis, Marion; aunt, Carie (Bryan) Levensky, Gas City; uncles, Jerry Lewis, Florida and James Allen Lewis, Bloomington, IN, as well as many great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013 in Eastview Wesleyan Church, 414 North 10^th Street, Gas City with Pastor Mark Atkinson presiding. Burial will follow in Estates of Serenity Cemetery, Marion.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Mary “Maxine” Elliott

 

May 7, 1919 -   August 4, 2013

Mary “Maxine” Elliott, 94, former local resident, passed away on August 4, 2013 at her residence in Lemont, Illinois.

The daughter of the late William and Kathryn McCaffrey, Maxine was born on May 7, 1919 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  She was raised in Hartford City and after graduating from Hartford City High School in 1937 began working in the Insurance Industry. 

She married Wallace “Raymond” Elliott on June 28, 1943 in Indianapolis at Fort Benjamin Harris Army Chapel. Married for 62 years, Maxine and Ray raised their three children, Michael, Stephen and Mary Kay together with an Army life which took them many places throughout the country, including a three year assignment in Orléans, France.  Colonel Elliott’s death occurred on April 4, 2005.

A member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Altar-Rosary Society she was a devout Catholic whose moral goodness and kindness was a testimony of her Catholic Faith. She was a member of the Blackford County Hospital Auxiliary, Co-founder of New-To-You Thrift Shop and an Honorary member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority which was founded by women joining together to make a difference in the lives of individuals one community at a time.

Nurturing Mother of three children, Michael Elliott, Burr Ridge, IL, Stephen Elliott, Oak Lawn, IL and Mary Kay Elliott, Darien, IL. Proud Grandmother of Michelle (Elliott) Thierry and Danielle (Elliott) Peterson both of Marquette, MI, and Nicole and Chad Elliott of Frankfort, IL. Delighted Great-Grandmother of four. Devoted Sister to Patricia “Tish” A. Schantz and adoring Aunt to many special nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Maxine is preceded in death by her brother William McCaffrey and two sisters, Rita Jean Westrick and Catherine Rosemond McCaffrey.

Throughout her life she endured life-threatening illnesses, but her will to live, unwavering faith in God and the prayers and love of her devoted husband, family and friends carried her through and beyond to many more wondrous years. 

Maxine’s virtuous gift of joy will never be forgotten. She was a loving, giving woman who always looked at the bright side of things and the goodness in all people.  She was a proud wife of an Army Colonel who walked through life with grace and dignity.

Our hearts are broken but we are forever grateful, honored and blessed to have been a part of your life and we will miss you with immeasurable sadness!

To all she loved, of course you know, she loved you ‘A Bushel and a Peck and a Hug around your Neck! You bet your Pretty Neck she did!

A Christian wake service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, August 8 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of her life will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2013 at St. John Evangelist Catholic Church, 209 S. Spring Street, Hartford City with Father Dave Newton presiding. Burial will follow at Hartford City Cemetery.

Memorials are requested to Blackford Community Foundation in lieu of flowers.

BETH SEELIG

HARTFORD CITY

Beth Seelig, 93, passed away Monday, August 5, 2013 at Westminster Village, Muncie.

She was born September 20, 1919 in Ohio City, Ohio, the daughter of Ada and Nellie (Rice) Prichard. She graduated from Ohio City High School and married Harold I. Seelig on August 5, 1940. Beth had resided in Hartford City from 1952 to 1987, moving to Florida and later to Muncie.

A former member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she had belonged to several bridge and euchre clubs and was an avid golfer. She also was a volunteer for RSVP for the underpriveledged.

Surviving are: one son, Steven (Diana) Seelig, Hartford  City,  one grandson, Brian Seelig, two brothers, Doyt (Jeanette) Prichard, Spencerville, Ohio and Robert Roehn, Delphos, Ohio, one sister, Phyllis (Fred) Ainsworth, Ohio City, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, and three brothers, Paul, Neil and William Prichard.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 8, 2013 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St. with Rev. Lloyd Hall officiating. Private burial will follow.

Friends may call from 10 – 11 a.m. Thursday.

RICHARD M. “DICK” LECHIEN

HARTFORD CITY

Richard M. “Dick” Lechien, 78, lifelong resident of Blackford County, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2013.

He was born in Blackford County to Arthur and Doris (Lucas) Lechien on November 4, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Carol Lechien Irwin Helvie, and a daughter-in-law, Valerie (Cross) Lechien.

Dick was a devoted and caring husband to his wife, Sue (Hoggatt) Lechien (from Upland), whom he married April 28, 1956 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hartford City. He was a graduate of Hartford City High School in 1952 and worked at 3M Company as a shift supervisor for 34 years, retiring in 1991.

He was very active in community service organizations that his children were involved with. He coached Pee Wee Football and Little League Baseball, was on many 4-H committees, member and past president of Blackford County Fair Board, and superintendent of the sheep department at the fair for over 30 years. Dick and Sue enjoyed playing bingo at the Montpelier Lions Club where they have been members for 10 years. He also played some golf and worked at wood carving.

In his retirement years, he and Sue enjoyed wintering at North Fort Myers, Florida. He was very active on many park committees while there.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Sue; sons, Mark (Angela), Eaton, Marty (Elaine), Hartford City, Monty (Kris), Albany; daughter, Marcy (Matt) McCormack, Bridgeville, PA., and 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 7 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Father Dave Newton officiating. Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery.

Friends may call at Waters Funeral Home from2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 6 and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

HARRIETT J. LAPHAM

Hartford City, IN

Harriett J. Lapham, 64, has joined her parents, Kenneth and Mary Hoffman, sisters Patricia L. Hoffman, Jane Ann Hoffman, Ada Hoffman, Mary Jean Mathews, Carol Sue Smith, and husband Dr. Robert Lapham in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Harriett was born June 18, 1949 and passed away in the comfort of her own home on July 1, 2013. She was cared for by Family Life Care Hospice and her loving sisters, Bonetha Haney , Debra E. Townsend, Emmajo Gray, brothers Thomas R. Hoffman (Pat), Kenneth R. Hoffman (Brenda), and nieces, Janie Velasquez (Bob) and Regina Arnold (Doug) in her final days.

Other surviving family members include nieces, Sara Haney, Melissa James (Keith), Cristy Matthews (Kenny), Angela Pulley, Mary Getty and Rosealee Hoffman. Niece Nancy Hutson preceded Harriett in death.

Surviving nephews are Robert Smith (Susie), Jay Hoffman (Kathy), Todd Hoffman (Teri), Jim Lloyd (Vivian), and David Pulley. Several great nieces and nephews also survive Harriett.

Harriett was preceded in death by brothers -in-law Robert Smith, Daniel Haney, and Tom Gray and a sister-in-law, Glenda K. Hoffman.

There will be only a private family viewing at Waters Funeral Home in Hartford City.

A Mass of Christian Burial for the public will be celebrated by Father Dave Newton at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 209 S. Spring St., Hartford City. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Kimberly Hornbaker

HARTFORD CITY, IN

            Kimberly L. Hornbaker, 58, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013, at her home, following a short, but courageous battle with cancer.

            Kim was born in Hartford City, January 8, 1955 and was a 1973 graduate of Muncie South High School.  She married Gail N. Hornbaker on April 24, 1987 in Miami, Florida.  He preceded her in death on November 30, 1993.

            She was a member of the Hartford City American Legion auxiliary and the Hartford City Amvets auxiliary and was well known throughout the community in her occupation as a bartender.  Kim was an avid I.U. fan.

            Surviving family include her daughter, Courtney, her parents, Bill and Mary Michael of Muncie, two step-brothers; Robert W. Michael (Debbie) of Huber Heights, Ohio and Jerry L. Michael of Troy, Ohio.

            In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a son Croix Nicholas Hornbaker and a step-brother, William D. Michael.

            Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, with Rev. Nancy Middaugh presiding.  Burial will follow the services in Hartford City Cemetery.

            Visitation will be Tuesday, July 2^nd, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and one hour prior to services on Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Richard Allen Robbins

RICHARD ALLEN ROBBINS

Eaton, Indiana

Richard Allen Robbins, 72, passed away Friday evening, June 28, 2013.

He was born on August 4, 1940, the son of Dewey V. Robbins and Esther M. (Willmann) Robbins and resided in Blackford County his entire life. He graduated in 1958 from Eaton High School.

He was a former factory worker and farmer before being disabled with vision and heart problems.

Richard is survived by one sister, Gloria A. Woolard, Eaton, one niece, Melissa A. Wilkey, Eaton, one great-niece, Malea A. Curtis (friend, Andrew Miller), Crown Point, Indiana, one great-nephew, Marc A. Wilkey, Eaton and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Twila, brother-in-law, James R. Woolard, and nephew, John D. Woolard.

He will be buried next to his parents in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hartford City.

Friends and family may gather at the cemetery for graveside services on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Penny Brown will officiate.
