George M. Reidy, 81

HARTFORD CITY, IN

George M. Reidy, 81, prominent Hartford City industrialist, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at IU Health Blackford Community Hospital, while in the company of his loving family.

A native and life long resident of Hartford City, he was born April 29, 1930 to Timothy Patrick and Helen Marie(Rapp) Reidy. George graduated from Hartford City High School in 1947, then the University of Notre Dame in 1952.

George served his country in the U.S. Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Higbee, as a gunnery officer during the Korean conflict, returning to Hartford City to marry Karleen O’Connell, February 12, 1955.

Mr. Reidy was the President of Hartford Glass Company, founded by his father in 1939. A member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, he was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus of Emil A. Schweier council #1639, the AMVETS, a Lifetime member of the American Legion Post #159 and was a founding member of the Blackford County Humane Society.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karleen; Children; Michael (Carma) Reidy, Pete(Ruth) Reidy, Tom Reidy, Colleen (Greg) Dickey, Dave (Kim) Reidy, Maureen Hall, Helen (Jon)Kelley and Christopher (Mary Jo)Reidy. 29 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sister, Barbara Breisch; brothers, Timothy Patrick Reidy II and Richard K. Reidy.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 209 S. Spring St., with Rev. David J. Newton as celebrant. Burial will follow, with military graveside rites by the Dunkirk American Legion in the Hartford City Cemetery.

Friends may call at Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City, from 1 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, July 22 and 9:00 to 9:40 a.m. Saturday. The Christian wake service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
