Hartford City
Patricia A. Schantz, 90, passed away Monday, September
14, 2015, in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
She was born in Fort Wayne to William and Kathryn
(Blackwell) McCaffrey on August 31, 1925 and graduated from Hartford City High
School in 1943. On July 22, 1950 Pat married William Schantz in St. John’s Catholic
Church, Hartford City. He preceded her in death on June 15, 2014.
Pat was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Altar-Rosary
Society, Wit and Wisdom Club, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, served on the board of the Blackford
Community Foundation and served as Vice President of Hartford Concrete
Products.
Pat enjoyed her beautiful garden. She served her local
and global community through her kind and generous work with Meals on Wheels
and founding a Psi Iota Xi Thrift Shop which evolved into New to You Thrift
Shop. She particularly wanted to help disadvantaged youth in poor or dangerous
living environments. She strongly supported the work of pro-life organizations
and anyone in need.
Survivors include one son, John (Trudy) Ryan,
Logansport; five daughters, Laura (Randy) Baird, Fremont, Kathryn (Todd) Helmke,
Fort Wayne, Joanne (Greg) Leach, Angola, Karen (Rich) Uggen, Hartford City and
Julie (Paul) McCarthy, Carmel; fifteen grandchildren, Shelly Haines, Sean Ryan,
Ashley Keegan, Elamie Hartman, Brittany Helmke, Austin Helmke, Chad Helmke,
Evan Leach, Lauren Leach, Landon Leach, Anya Uggen, Ammee Uggen, Max Uggen,
Will Uggen and Luke McCarthy. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
a brother, William McCaffrey, and two sisters, Maxine Elliott and Rita
Westrick.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated
by Father Dave Newton and Father Keith Hosey at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September
19 in St. John’s Catholic Church, 209 S. Spring St., Hartford City. Burial will
follow in Hartford City Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday, September 18 from 3:00 –
7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W.
Washington St., Hartford City.
A Christian Wake Service will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday
in the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are for Masses or Schantz Family
Scholarship Fund through the Blackford Community Foundation.
