HERBERT VAUGHN RIDGEWAY

HARTFORD CITY, IN

Herbert Vaughn Ridgeway, 85, died Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Muncie Health Care & Rehabilitation Center.

The son of Robert Earl and Joanna A. (Hummer) Ridgeway, he was born June 28, 1924 in Dunkirk. Herb graduated from Hartford City High School in 1942 and served in the Army Air Force in the European Theatre from 1943-1945. He received several ribbons with 6 clusters.

On August 4, 1946, he married Virginia A. Everhart at the United Brethren Church, Hartford City.

Mr. Ridgeway had worked at Marhoefer Packing Co., the Gulf Service Station, Hartford City, Moore Company, Muncie, Hartford Tool & Die Co. and retired after 34 years at Borg Warner Automotive, Muncie.

Herb was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Blackford Lodge #106 F & AM, Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine, both of Fort Wayne, Blackford Shrine Club, U.A.W. Local 287 and was a life member of American Legion Post 159 and Hartford City Elks 625.

He fought in the Golden Gloves, Muncie in 1941-43, 1946 and 1949 and was flyweight champion for 4 years and runner-up the 5th year. He was quarter finalist in the Chicago Golden Gloves in 1942, 1943 & 1949. Herb also enjoyed golfing and fishing.

Survivors include: his wife, Virginia; nieces and nephews, Trudy (Mark) Cooper, Dean (Judy) Everhart, Wally Everhart, Joanna (John) Oxley, Carolyn Pollard, Marti McKeighen, Don (Ava) Everhart, Paul Everhart, Sue (Perry) Prewitt, and Bill (Sharon) Meacham; one godchild, Todd (Bashka) Everhart; cousins, Michael (Cindy) Howard, Martha (Rex) Wall, Sara Wamser, Delite Townsend, Dorothy Ann Gull, Maxine McIlwain, Yetieve Williams, Betty Poorman and Tom (Donna)Howard; 2 sister-in-laws, Zelma Everhart and Josephine Ridgeway.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles D. Ridgeway, brother-in-laws, Robert Everhart and Frank Everhart, Jr., a sister-in-law, Twinkle Everhart and a special cousin, Marjorie Howard.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 27 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Rev. Lloyd Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Muncie, with military graveside rites.

Friends may call at Waters Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 26 and after noon on Thursday. Masonic Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
