Bertha B. Monfort

HARTFORD CITY, IN

Bertha B. Monfort, 92, passed away June 4, 2010 at her residence.

The daughter of William E. and Leona (Andre) Knecht, she was born December 28, 1917 in Hartford City. She graduated from Hartford City High School in 1936 and worked at Franklin Security Company in Hartford City and Louisville, Kentucky. Bert married John W. Monfort on August 30, 1941. His death occurred April 28, 1981.

John was the owner/publisher of the Hartford City News-Times and Bert worked as Women’s Editor until retiring in 1993. She continued to write a weekly column, “Bert’s Beat” until summer 2009.

Bert was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Altar-Rosary Society, Blackford County Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Library and Blackford Golf Club. She was a former board member of Blackford Community Foundation, Tri Kappa Sorority and was a founding member of Board of Governors of Minnetrista Cultural Center, Muncie.

Survivors include her children: David W. (Winne) Monfort, Honaunau, Hawaii, Suzan M. Monfort, Duvall, Washington, Katherine Ann “Kam” (Michael) Martin, Littleton, Colorado, Colonel Ralph D. Monfort, retired, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mary M. Monfort, Englewood, Colorado, and Elizabeth A. Monfort, Duvall, Washington; seven grandchildren, Christopher Monfort, John (Laura) Martin, James Martin, Kristine (Max)
Schillinger, Kawika Monfort Chang, Joseph A. Monfort and Amelia Ruth; four great-grandchildren, Sara and Felix Martin, Alex and Anna Schillinger; and one brother, Joseph (Monica) Knecht, Monroeville, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Marie Ravaux and Wilma Lord, and three brothers, William, Russell and Robert Knecht.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Robert Williams at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 209 S. Spring St., Hartford City. Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City from 2- 4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 7 and from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday .
