WILLIAM BLAINE SWOVELAND

HARTFORD CITY, IN

William Blaine Swoveland, 90, passed away at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Millers Merry Manor.

Blaine was born in Blackford County on March 25, 1920, the second of three sons, to William Henry and Crystalo (Michael) Swoveland. A 1938 graduate of Eaton High School, he was an Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II.

His marriage to Dorothy Schmidt occurred on September 10, 1944 in Zion Lutheran Church, Hartford City.

A lifelong farmer of this county, he retired from farming in 1985. Blaine served as County Commissioner for eleven years and served on the County Council for seven years.

In addition to his service to his church, country, and local government, Blaine was a member of Indiana Farm Bureau, the Blackford County Fair Board, the American Legion Post #159, AMVETS Post #23, and the Blackford County Coon Hunters Club.

An avid fisherman, Blaine enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Schmidt) Swoveland; four daughters, Anita Reid, Hartford City, Mary (Mrs. Richard) Cary, Loudon, TN, Judith (Mrs. Max) Wiesnenauer, Georgetown, IN and Patricia Gaither, Hartford City; eight grandchildren, Holly Underwood, Brad Reid, Dr. Chad Wiesenauer, Jason Wiesenauer, Mike Gaither, Elizabeth Dennison, Kimberli Withrow and Aimee Wilson; 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Dustin Reid on December 30, 2007, two brothers, Ferdinand in 1980 and Rex in 1990.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 21 in Waters Funeral Home, 501 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Pastor Mark Strietelmeier and Rev. Lloyd Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Eaton, with military graveside rites by Delaware County Veterans Organization.

Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to service on Monday at the funeral home.
