JOSEPH J. DORNBERGER, JR.


Hartford City

Joseph J. Dornberger, Jr., 84, passed away Saturday, August 24 in Sarasota, Florida. He was born in Washington, Pennsylvania to Joseph J. and Clara (Doty) Dornberger. The family moved to Indiana and he graduated from Dunkirk High School.
Joe served in the U. S. Navy for 27 years retiring as Senior Chief Petty Officer and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After retirement he worked for both the Sarasota Sheriff Department and Venice Police Department.

He was a member of the Church of the Incarnation in Sarasota for 39 years where he ministered as an altar server, particularly at funerals. He was a member of the Men’s Club at the church and Knights of Columbus Council 15332. Joe was also a lifetime member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and American Legion Post 320.
Surviving are: a daughter, Roberta (Gary) Wasmer, Newport News, Va., a granddaughter, Amanda Wasmer, Richmond, VA, a brother-in-law, Thurman Ray, Venice, FL, sister-in-law, Felicia Dornberger, Dunkirk and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joanne (O’Connell) Dornberger, his parents, a brother, Leonard Dornberger, a sister, Ellen Turney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Dave Newton at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 209 S. Spring St., Hartford City. Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with military rites conducted by Delaware County Veterans Organization.

Friends may call at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
